Flavonoid Resveratrol

Does red wine resveratrol resolve the French paradox?
Resveratrol is a polyphenol flavonoid type currently exciting great interest as a blessing for health. Like other flavonoids and polyphenols, is a very useful anti-oxidant in its own right, but resveratrol has attracted attention as a possible solution to the so-called "French paradox."
This is the term used to describe the phenomenon, which has long been an enigma for medical science, by which cardiovascular disease rates in France have remained low relative to the rest of the developed world, despite broad domestic consumption of a diet high in animal fat and cholesterol and the deeply rooted habit of snuff. Of course France also has many of the benefits of the Mediterranean diet calls through its high consumption of fruits and vegetables, oily fish and olive oil, but there are good reasons to believe that red wine consumption may be the true explanation for the apparent paradox.
We know, in any case that moderate alcohol consumption has a significant protective effect on the cardiovascular system, reducing the disease by up to 20-30%, but conventional medical opinion is characteristic caution, recognizing that the resveratrol in red wine may have some benefit above that in any case, provided by alcohol. However, the role of fat-soluble antioxidants in the protection of the circulatory system damaging the radical attack free well understood, and therefore, it seems that resveratrol and other polyphenols contained in red wine can only be beneficial. Laboratory tests have also demonstrated that resveratrol significantly anticoagulants and anti-inflammatory effects.
For the purpose of obtaining the use of resveratrol from wine you need to know is contained mainly in the skin of red grapes or black, and, therefore, found in significant quantities only in wines produced by a fermentation process initial pulp allows alcohol to leach the color development and other substances, including resveratrol from the skins. It follows that the longer this pulp fermentation is allowed to continue over the resveratrol in wine will contain. So the color of wine is a practical guide. In general, the richest and darker the color of wine is the most resveratrol. Rose and red light types may contain some, but white wines produced by fermentation of juice only offer little or none.
In general, red wines are produced in the sunnnier climates near the Mediterranean, and the New World, which is richer in resveratrol, and dark red wines of this type can provide up to 2 mg of resveratrol in a small glass 5 oz. But unfortunately from the point of view of health, they also tend to be stronger in alcohol and so-called "congeners", which emphasize hangovers.
But fortunately for those who do not like red wine, or is concerned about alcohol consumption, other sources of resveratrol are available. The amount in foods varies widely, but the best sources are peanuts and red grapes, which may require anywhere between 0.3 and 1.3 mg of resveratrol per cup. Cranberries and blueberries can also be a useful source.
Supplements Resveratrol is readily available, mainly in the form of red wine or red grape extract, which also contain other antioxidant polyphenols. the doses recommended by the manufacturer normally provide between 10 and 50 mg of resveratrol, which would require a very high and potentially dangerous, the level of wine consumption achieve regularity.
That said, there is no known toxicity taking resveratrol, as such, although its anticoagulant properties tend to inhibit the clotting ability Blood and resveratrol is not recommended for those taking anticoagulant drugs like warfarin, or certain types of inflammation like aspirin. Needless to say, without But the problems of toxicity of a different type may occur if alcoholic beverages are used in excess as the main or only source.
But as noted previously, moderate consumption is generally recognized as beneficial to health, especially for the cardiovascular system. So the message seems to be: if you want enjoy a couple glasses of wine with dinner, then go right ahead. And the pleasure that the old reinforced by the knowledge that it also contains resveratrol is doing something good.
