Chemically, resveratrol is a polyphenol that includes flavonoids and proanthocyanadins, both antioxidants very powerful. An increase in nitric oxide by appropriate antioxidants may help reduce blood pressure closer to normal. The resveratrol is more effective in achieving this than any of the antioxidants vitamin A, C or E. It does so by opening the arteries and reduce resistance to blood flow through them. .

It also helps prevent blood cells from sticking together and forming clots that can lead to serious cardiovascular problems, and has been found in Canadian studies to be effective against a much wider range of chemicals that promote clotting blood than any other part of anti-clotting wine. In fact, it has been established and more or less confirmed by the medical profession, to drink red wine significantly reduces the effects of cardiovascular disease and may even go a largely cured. Inflammation is a condition that is caused by the body's immune system, which aims to protect against foreign invaders. However, once inflammation starts, it triggers further the immune response itself, which if unchecked can lead to conditions that are extremely painful and sometimes very serious, even after the main trigger initial immune response has been exhausted.

Inflammation is regulated by chemicals called cytokines, the master of which is NF Kappa B controls all other cytokines. NF kappa B also controls the activity of cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2) for the bulk of the immune system that causes inflammation.

COX-2 is an enzyme that increases the production of Postaglandin E-2 (PGE-2) which is an essential trigger for T cells that attack foreign cells received. If PGE-2 is deleted, then T cells are not activated. This is an essential part of reducing unwanted inflammation. However, it can be dangerous to remove molecules under NF Kappa B, such as COX-2 or PGE-2. VIOXX is a good example of the kind of heart problems that can occur if you try this type of inhibition and Celebrex is another.

The beauty of resveratrol is that although advertised and stated that the control of COX-2 and E 2-prostoglandin, it does so by removing the action NF Kappa B, the "ultimate controller" of the war inflammatory.

Finally, there is also some evidence that resveratrol may have an effect on aging. It is well known that the powerful antioxidants may help protect against cell destruction that free radicals can cause, and thereby help protect the body against the aging effects of this cell destruction. However, there is another way in which resveratrol could help all of us looks younger in the future (although for many of us is a bit too late!).

Sirtuins (Silent information regulator proteins) are enzymes that are known to promote cell survival through adverse conditions, such as SIRT 1 protects against premature aging by removing the destruction of damaged cells long enough to be repaired. Plant polyphenols such as resveratrol are though to be able to activate sirtuins, with the possibility to extend life by slowing the destruction of natural cells, and have also proven to be able to slow aging by activating of sirtuins to mimic the benefits of caloric restriction.

There are still plenty of research and work required by resveratrol, but signs are evident that this is a possibility in the future to extend the average life span of human beings by a significant amount. In the case of yeast has been shown that up to 80%.
